Under the UK's new agreement with the EU announced yesterday, UK residents' rights to emergency and medically necessary healthcare will continue post Brexit when travelling in the EU. This includes medically necessary treatment for a pre-existing or chronic condition.

A new Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) will gradually replace existing European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC)

Current UK-issued European Health Insurance Cards (EHICs) are still valid and offer the same cover as GHICs in the EU. However, once your EHIC has expired, you’ll be able to replace it with a GHIC free of charge from the official GHIC website

The GHIC covers medically necessary state-provided healthcare at a reduced cost or, in many cases, free of charge.

It is however strongly recommended that all travellers should take out comprehensive travel insurance prior to undertaking any overseas journey.
